At the end of June this year Palmbout Urban Landscapes took part in the Dutch Dialogues in Virginia. This region is one of the most flood-prone coastal areas in the United States. In conjunction with local and Dutch administrators, engineers and designers, we worked during a several-day workshop on design proposals for Hampton Roads on the Chesapeake Bay. Jaap van den Bout and Sabien Thomaes co-developed proposals for the improvement of the coast of Norfolk and the banks of the New Market Creek. How can the threat of flooding be harnessed effectively for spatial opportunities for the hinterland? The final presentation was very well received and provided a masterly example of designing across all scales and professional domains!
